Weaving Waves
Solo exhibition by Leoni Pirenne
Leoni Pirenne exhibits WEAVING WAVES, an immersive installation about a deep experience of consciousness and Terschelling, one of the islands on the Dutch north coast.
From her background as a scenographer, Leoni explored the possibilities of the Scope BLN’s exhibition space and thus this site-specific installation was created. The viewer experiences the work both from outside on the sidewalk and inside, in the middle of the artwork. In doing so, Leoni explores the roles of the viewer and the performer that fluidly merge in this installation.
The installation is a representation of a spiritual research Leoni has been relating to for the past two years. It is a personal take on a big question: how do I experience ‘consciousness’? For this, she uses the metaphor of a sunrise by a sea. Consciousness as an ocean through which emotions, thoughts and other physical experiences flow like waves of energy. The vertical dark depths, the horizontal light surface and everything in between. Your breath as a sun that gives light and life to every experience.
The installation also refers a to physical place that means a lot to Leoni. The dune landscape of Terschelling, one of the islands on the north coast of the Netherlands. A specific memory of a sunrise with friends on this island, a moment in which Leoni experienced a total overwhelm of nature, acted as another inspiration for the installation.
Sound designer Joseph James Francis developed the soundscape for the installation. For this he used recordings of ambient sounds from the dunes of Terschelling and recordings of Leoni's voice.
