UNFLATTEN
Filipa Tojal
solo exhibition
April 19th - April 30th, 2021
The exhibition is based on works developed by Filipa Tojal whilst on a 3 months residency at Scope BLN, where the artist continued her poetic work inside the painting universe. Her visual constructions, developed during the winter lockdown in Berlin reflect the intimate wander that happens in a secluded time in the studio while in an unknown and locked city. The recent works revolve around the choice and handling of simple materials such as papers, binders and pigments. Conversations between lines and configurations take place inside the exhibition space, allowing the observer to wander about our position on the ground and the preponderance of nature.
Filipa Tojal (Porto in 1993), holds a BA in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Porto and completed a Master’s Degree in Painting at Tokyo University of the Arts. Filipa has lived the last four years in Japan and has participated in artistic residencies in France, India, Indonesia, Azores and has presented her work solo and collectively in both Portugal and Japan.
INNER LANDSCAPE
Massimiliano Cerioni
Audiovisual installation (Inspired by Filipa Tojal's exhibition)
Massimiliano Cerioni uses electroacoustic music, photo editing of painting close-ups, machine learning models and generative algorithms. The artist borrows colors and details from photos of Filipa Tojal's paintings. He has treated these materials as generators of imaginary landscapes that morph into each other continuously. Music is created accordingly to this feeling by following the charming colors streams and turning them into soft melodic patterns and colored textures. The artwork title Inner Landscape is an homage to the meditative piano work of John Cage In A Landscape, which in turn is inspired by Erik Satie's compositions.
Massimiliano Cerioni (Italy, 1986) is an audiovisual composer and sound-art performer. He has graduated from the A. Casella Conservatory of L'Aquila under the direction of Michelangelo Lupone. In 2015 he placed 1st at the Italian national art prize Premio Abbado. In June 2019 he is resident artist from the EMS – Elektron Musik Studion in Stockholm. In 2021 his AV work Asleep? has been selected for the Psychedelic Film and Music Festival in New York City. In 2020 he also announced his software project Culto, focused on releasing devices for music creation.
