ZU SUMMEN
solo exhibition by Jessica Segall
May 4 – May 29, 2023
Opening: Thursday, May 4 at 7 p.m.
Live performance by Yiannis Loukos at 8 p.m.
The exhibition Zu Summen is based on Fugue on B Flat which started as an interspecies sculpture.
In 2016, Jessica Segall was commissioned to make a sculpture for the 30th anniversary of Socrates Sculpture Park. Celebrating the recent legalization of beekeeping in New York City, Segall colonized a grand piano with honeybees. A piezo mic both amplified the sounds of the hive for visitors in the park and recorded the sounds transcribed in the scores for performance in this exhibition. The sounds you will hear are a combination of a natural system of logic and survival within a man-made system or order and harmony. A single piano will attempt to reinterpret the bee's audible lives in a score written for piano by 30,000 honeybees.
In the exhibition are included also 5 drawings from a series of graphic scores, plein air drawings / observations of bee hive choreography. They are drawn using a rastrum: a classic calligraphy tool for writing staff lines.
Projection of footage taken from the original Fugue in B Flat piano will be projected in the space of Scope BLN.
Opening: Thursday, May 4 at 7 p.m.
